Funding available for scientific research within the fishing industry

22.02.23

Our Fishing Animateur project is working with the Fishmongers’ Company’s Fisheries Charitable Trust and Fishing into the Future to support several industry-led research projects across the UK. Industry partners who came forward with an idea for a research proposal have been connected to a relevant academic, with grant writing and funding support offered through the FISP Network. Successful projects have been fully funded and covered a range of topics, including gear modifications to increase targeted catches, reduce by-catch and/or prevent entanglements; stock assessments of new potential fisheries; environmental concerns, population studies for species at risk; and research on the impact of offshore wind farms on shellfish.

In England, the Government’s Fisheries and Seafood Scheme (FASS) scheme is still open, with funds of up to £80,000 available for science. The FISP Network are asking industry members with a research idea and in need of support to come forward. No idea is too grand or too small. If it fits with the FASS scheme, we can then develop your idea into a project proposal. Fishmongers’ can provide matched-funding support up to £20,000.
