The Government’s Social Exclusion Unit’s definition of social inclusion is “what can happen when people or areas suffer from a combination of linked problems such as unemployment, poor skills, low incomes, poor housing, high crime environment, bad health and family breakdown.”
People can become excluded from society because they are different, either because of their appearance, their beliefs, their lifestyles or their health. They may also become excluded because they are part of a group that is unable to take part in what society views as normal, traditional daily activities – the disabled, the unemployed, the homeless and the young. People that are excluded are often the ones that are not able to voice their opinions or needs because of a lack of confidence or because they have difficulties in finding those people that will listen and help them.
CRCC’s Social Inclusion Worker works with:
- Young people in north and east Cornwall
- The Cornwall Independent Poverty Forum
- Black and Minority Ethnic communities
- Local Network Fund – More Information on www.everychildmatters.gov.uk (http://www NULL.everychildmatters NULL.gov NULL.uk/strategy/localnetworkfund/)
The project focuses on supporting projects addressing social exclusion, involving or affecting young people, between the ages of 14 and 24 years, in East Cornwall. The project will also provide assistance in the development and delivery of projects involving young people.
The project will focus on three main themes:
- Aspirations and Experiences Some young people miss out on experiences that others take for granted. Projects can help young people achieve goals that they would otherwise be unable to achieve.
- Isolation and Access Projects can provide support for young people who may feel isolated or alone, or have difficulty accessing services.
- Young People’s Voices Giving young people the chance to express their opinions and contribute to improving policy and resources are issues that concern them.
