Every year, across the country groups provide advice and information to carers in public places on Carers Rights Day which this year is on Friday, 5 December. The aims of this day are to increase carers’ take up of benefits, inform them of their rights and raise awareness of the needs of carers.
There are estimated to be 55,000 carers in Cornwall whose lives are often restricted by taking responsibility for the care of someone who, due to frailty, severe illness or disability is unable to remain in their own home without their support. Every year 2.3 million people become carers and it is estimated that carers are missing out on £740million per year in unclaimed benefits and that overall, carers save the government £87 billion every year because they are not paid for the care they provide.
The Carers’ Support Service, managed by Cornwall Rural Community Council, a registered charity, will be offering advice and information on the 5 December between 10am and 3pm in the following supermarkets:-
If you are a carer or know someone who is caring for a partner, relative, friend or neighbour do come along and talk to our Carers Support Co-ordinators and gain information and advice and the various ways the service can help carers. If you are unable to get to either of these venues but would like more information about the Carers’ Support Service ring 01872 243531 and you will be put in touch with the Carers’ Support Co-ordinator in your area.
