Carers’ contribution recognised with a dedicated Carol Service
Despite the weather, the Carers’ Carol Service, held on Monday 7 December, was enjoyed by 200 people including carers and guests from health, social care and the voluntary sectors. Cornwall Rural Community Council’s (CRCC) annual service was this year held at Truro Methodist Church and celebrated the valuable contribution carers give to a relative, partner, friend or neighbour, who due to their disability, ill health or frailty need support to enable them to remain in their own homes. Despite tough economic times and the arrival of Arctic weather conditions, millions of people are missing out on free help with their energy bills because they don’t think the assistance on offer is meant for ‘people like me’, new research commissioned by the Home Heat Helpline (0800 33 66 99) has revealed. Young people take over the Council Chamber
A unique event took place on Monday 8 November, which gave young people ranging from 21 years to seven years an opportunity to learn how democracy works. ‘Young People take over the Council Chamber’ was held in Cornwall Council’s Chambers and was arranged just like a real council session, with young people debating issues that are high on their agenda such as bullying, transport, facilities and pollution. Calor Free
A three year energy campaign funded by Calor Gas Limited. The aim is to give independent advice and information regarding fuel choices, energy efficient technologies and carbon reduction measures. This initiative is aimed at off-grid rural communities, focusing on those villages with a high index of fuel poverty and will be working in West Cornwall in the first year of the project. National Carers Week events across Cornwall
It is National Carers Week from 14 to 20 June and to raise awareness and identify carers in Cornwall, three of the main Cornish carers support services are working in partnership to hold some events. Carers Support staff from the Cornwall Rural Community Council (CRCC), Origo and Cornwall Community Volunteer Services (CCVS) will offer free impartial advice, information on a wide range of carer issues and signpost people to appropriate services.
