What is a Social Enterprise?

A business established and owned with community involvement that trades in goods or services and whose surpluses are put back into the local community

‘Social Enterprise in Cornwall’ is a new 30 page guide published by Cornwall Rural Community Council with 14 local case studies and an explanation of what social enterprises are, how to go about establishing one and where to get more help.

Community Enterprise Service aims to:

• To raise awareness of social enterprise activity in Cornwall
• To provide strategic support on the development of social enterprise
• To offer advice and information to groups considering social enterprise
• To build the capacity of groups embarking on the development of social enterprise
• To promote peer support and mentoring among social enterprises
• To signpost emerging and established social enterprises to specialist support
• To map and monitor the growth of social enterprise
• To provide case studies and examples of best practice

Offer signposting and referral to other specialist support agencies

Help and Advice

The CRCC provides a Community Enterprise service offering help in the following areas:

• Developing and establishing community enterprises
• Project design and management
• Advice on business plans
• Support in terms of marketing and promotion
• Guidance on legal status and registration

Workshops

Practical sessions exploring models of social enterprise, relevant legal issues, financial planning, preparation of business plans, marketing and media, building design.
