All Villages wishing to enter Cornwall Sustainable Village of the Year 2011 Competition should submit their entries by 9 September.
Following the success of last years competition, Cornwall Rural Community Council (CRCC) with SITA UK and support from the West Briton are inviting applications from communities to celebrate how they are working together to make their villages more sustainable. Communities are encouraged to apply to the competition, no matter how many projects, big or small, it is a chance to celebrate and promote the hard work that has been put in to making your village more sustainable.
Last years winners – a joint application from Laddock and Grampound Road – found the competition was a really positive experience. Chris Jones, a member of the Transition Group said,
“Something that has been highlighted for us particularly is the need to foster community, both within our parish and with our neighbouring parishes and towns. The prize money has been spent on smart meters to help us identify where we can easily reduce energy use and edible landscape planting (trees and fruit bushes). The filming has been great fun and the resulting documentary looks fabulous.”
Every entrant will receive practical prizes along a theme of promoting sustainability, such as, a quantity of power saving devices, plus a package of other goodies – and apart from this, you will have a chance to win £1,000, the offer of support from a dedicated community development worker and a short film made to showcase your community.
