Cornish villages to celebrate their sustainable achievements
Cornwall Rural Community Council (CRCC) with SITA UK and support from the West Briton are inviting applications to the Cornwall Sustainable Village of the Year competition for 2011.
The competition, in its second year, focuses on how communities are working together to make their villages more sustainable. Communities are encouraged to apply to the competition, no matter how many projects, big or small, it is a chance to celebrate and promote the hard work that has been put in to making your village more sustainable.
There is a £1,000 cash prize for the top placed village to put towards their sustainable community projects and they will also have the opportunity of support from a dedicated community development worker to develop and implement their ideas. All entries, whether shortlisted or not, will receive gifts such as power downs, shower savers, solar torches, energy advice booklets and many other goodies.
Marita Ward of CRCC said,
“We encourage any village to have a go; whether you are proud of securing allotments or creating employment opportunities locally, we want to hear about them. This competition is about villages that have started to introduce sustainable projects and are passionate about making their communities a nicer place to live.”
Mike Dobson, Regional Communications Manager, at SITA UK said,
“Playing an active role in local communities is important to us and we are proud to link up, once again, with the Cornwall Rural Community Council to promote sustainability. We wish all entrants the very best of luck.”
