Cornwall’s services for carers to be transformed
Carers in Cornwall will soon benefit from a brand new service, following a tender process, that has seen Cornwall Rural Community Council (CRCC) be awarded a three year contract with funding from Cornwall Council’s Adult Care and Support, Children, Schools and Families and the Primary Care Trust to develop a Carers Centre Service.
As the lead organisation, CRCC will be working in partnership with Age Concern Cornwall, Carers Rights and Disability Cornwall to develop the service, which will offer a dedicated helpline, a comprehensive website and a complement of 20 staff based across Cornwall.
CRCC are well placed to deliver this service since they have been providing support to carers since 1993 and recognise the wide range of issues and needs carers face in their caring roles and the information, support and services that will help them to continue caring. The new service will aim to identify hidden carers, as it is known from the last census, 55,000 people in Cornwall identified themselves as carers.
Monica Thomas, Carers Support Manager at CRCC said,
“this is a really exciting time for carers, with a single point of contact to direct them to services and support, it will eliminate the confusion of ‘which services are appropriate for their individual needs’ and the additional services that will be available will provide them with information and support to continue in their caring roles”.
Working over the next 15 months, the service will be developed to provide a range of support, including a helpline with a single number for all carer enquiries and referrals (accessible from 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday), a dedicated and comprehensive website, carers forums (giving carers a “voice”), generic Carers Support Workers and specialist workers (for adult mental health, dementia, young adult carers, learning disabilities, autism and BME), a regular Newsletter and a programme of events and activities, in particular during Carers Week and on Carers Rights Day.
CRCC’s Carers Support Workers will continue be available for support and advice in the interim period and for details of this service please go to www.cornwallrcc.org.uk/services/carers or on 01872 243531.
